Swing, blues, bossa nova and Brazilian compositions at Rex Hotel

Mimi’s love of intricate rhythms, melody, and harmony holds her heart steadfastly in the creative and passionate energy of jazz.  This Sunday’s performance will feature all of these elements with a focus on Brazilian music with special guest Brazilian-born samba maestro Guiomar Campbell.
The first set includes swing, and blues, and a few bossa novas, while the second set will be flowing with Brazilian compositions.

Miriam Snider
Mimi has performed for several of the Vancouver International Jazz Festivals  (with Russ Botten, Tony Foster and Joe Poole)  while  promoting her self-produced “CD “Thank you, Merci ” (2007)  with the same musicians.  She has also performed in Vancouver and Toronto clubs with local jazz favourites.  In the past, she had spent some time in percussion ensembles (including Ballet Creole, Samba Squad) as backup vocalist and supporting percussionist performing  in numerous Toronto festivals and venues including Premier Dance Theatre (now Fleck Dance Theatre), Dumaurier Theate, (now Harbourfront Centre Theatre) as well as at The Governor General Awards with Samba Squad to accompany Jesse Cook.  She had also accompanied Kalalu Folklore Theatre during Toronto Storytelling Festivals.  You can listen to sound files of her debut CD “”Thank you, Merci “at www.cdbaby.com/cd/mimisnider  It is her tribute to the musicians of New Orleans.


Guiomar Campbell

"Guiomar Campbell is a vocalist, percussionist, composer, and leader of the band Parabolica, and has been performing in Toronto since 1978 in a variety Brazilian as well as Cuban, South African, and World percussion ensembles. She has performed with many top Toronto acts, including the Toronto Pops Orchestra, Jesse Cook at the Montreal Jazz Festival, and with Grammy nominated jazz flautist Jane Bunnett as part of the Global Divas series. Guiomar received an award for her achievement in art and culture by the Ministry of Multiculturalism, Jean Augustine and the National Ethnic Press. Guiomar was also a cast member of Da Kink in My Hair, a successful Canadian play which ran at the Princess of Wales Theatre and also provided the rhythmic pulse for the play entitled “First Hand Woman.” She also leads workshops for both adults and children in samba drumming and dancing.  She is a mother of 2, a Registered Nurse from Brazil and is also a shiatsu therapist and acupuncturist working out of her office in Yorkville, called Lotus Arts and Wellness.  She is also the creator of Biosync-Rhythm, a combination of dance, drumming, and yoga."
